After months of waiting, the long promised battle royale game mode arrived in Battlefield V. In Firestorm players combat each other in a fearsome fight to the death in a shrinking ring of fire that absorbs the largest map ever featured in a Battlefield game, but are gamers still waiting for another battle royale game?
Multiplayer games have evolved quite a lot since the beginning of time, but most people are bored of traditional multiplayer games and search for alternatives. The battle royale genre is the latest trend in online multiplayer games and appears in even more games as a separate game mode.
After the first rumours started spreading about a battle royale game mode being featured in the latest Battlefield game, it was only a question about how it would differentiate itself from the hard competion.
Weapons, vehicles and explosions
As a longtime fan of the Battlefield franchise, I have become used to the constant sounds of weapons, vehicles, collapsing buildings and massive explosions. Firestorm, the battle royale game mode of the latest Battlefield game, successfully captures the essence of the franchise in the battle royale format.
This map is filled with vehicles, weapons, and destructible environments that will ideally help you eliminate your enemies. The rewarding gameplay of the base game transfers over to Firestorm, which means that weapons have predictable recoil patterns and more experienced players are able to improve their accuracy over time.
Firestorm is Battlefield’s take on the battle royale mode, but it’s not quite like most of the popular battle royale modes out there.
Minecraft survival games
In Minecraft, I discovered the hunger games game mode by accident and kind of enjoyed it. This battle royale mode is interesting to play and entertaining enough to keep you engaged over a longer period of time.
At the beginning of the round, all players, or tributes, stand in a large circle around a cache of supplies and weapons. When the timer hits zero, all bets are off and hell breaks lose in a fight for survival. The last man standing is the winner.
Thousands of gamers
Years after its initial release, this battle royale game mode in Minecraft still attracts thousands of players. Minecraft hunger games servers are created and run by the community, which means new maps and new modes are all in the hands of the fans.
In other battle royale games, the developers decide which content is added to the game, and which is taken out of the game. The lootboxes and microtransactions are one of the reasons I steer away from these battle royale games. I prefer unlocking the items with credits, instead of purchasing them.
Search for better weapons and equipment
In every battle royale game, you need to find better weapons and suplies in order to survive and kill the other players near the end of the game. All loot in Minecraft is hidden within chests. If you open a chest, a chest opening noise let everyone in the surrounding area know you are taking supplies.
In Battlefield, you can open bunkers to obtain stronger vehicles, but a deafening alarm will alert nearby players giving away your position. You are unable to turn around and shoot enemies while opening these vehicle lockups. This makes your search for powerful vehicles even more dangerous.
Different styles of gameplay
The reason why battle royale games are popular among gamers, is their freedom of choice. You are able to use different tactics and gameplay styles to reach the final stage of the rounds. All methods can be proven equally effective.
At the beginning of the survival games in Minecraft, you decide to rush to the weapons in the centre of the circle and risk dying in the immediate and violent battle, or hope to scavenge one from a fallen enemy later on in the game? It is your choice.
A new game mode to experience
Firestorm is a decent battle royale mode, but I wish it stood out from the competition a bit more. I prefer the gameplay of Battlefield 5 and this new game mode is a perfect addition to the existing content. As an additional multiplayer mode, battle royale offers a slightly different experience.
Firestorm is not a different game, but an alternative game mode for players to enjoy. After a few rounds of battle royale, I have seen enough and switch back to a more traditional game mode such as conquest, team deathmatch or domination. This is how battle royale should be.
