A higher refresh rate monitor does make a difference in terms of gameplay experience. Most capture cards only support a refresh rate of 60 Hz. After searching for a solution to enjoy games in 144 Hz on a high refresh rate monitor while recording the gameplay footage, there seem to exist a simple solutions. With a few adjustments to your setup, you can enjoy games in 144 Hz or even higher refresh rate while recording with an Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro in 60 frames per second.
Connect the correct cables
To use this method, you need to connect the high refresh rate monitor to your graphics card with a DisplayPort cable and the HDMI output of the graphics card needs to be connected to the HDMI input of your capture card.
In the Windows settings, you should see the available displays under the category display settings. If you have connected the cables as mentioned in the previous step, you should see your monitor and a second one known as Elgato.
Duplicate the first monitor to the second display
As you see in the Windows display settings, you can change the setting under multiple displays. By default, this setting is put on extend these displays. For work or school, this may be helpful, but you need to change the option to duplicate. This option allows you to see the exact same screen on all your monitors or displays.
The output on your monitor connected with a DisplayPort to your graphics card will be the exact same as the output of the HDMI cable connected to the capture card. The difference between the two displays will be the refresh rate of the output.
Change the output of the monitor to the correct refresh rate
In the display settings in the Windows settings, you can find the advanced display settings. These settings allow you to change the resolution and refresh rate to the correct resolution and refresh rate of your monitor. Some high refresh rate monitor require the installation of a separate driver or software.
In the software, you can also change the refresh rate. In the Nvidia Control Panel or the AMD Radeon Software, you can change the refresh rate per monitor.
After a few moments, you should see your monitor in the recording or streaming software if you add the Elgato Game Capture HD60 Pro as a recording device. Keep in mind that the resolution of the monitor needs to be the same as the resolution supported by the capture card to work.
