Microsoft added a new feature that allows you to stream games installed on your Xbox console to any compatible Android or iOS device over your local network. To take advantage of this Xbox Remote Play feature, you need to use an Xbox One or Xbox Series console, a supported mobile phone and a wireless Xbox controller with Bluetooth support.

The Xbox Remote Play feature is available to all Xbox users with the latest updates installed on their Xbox One, Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. This feature will also be available to users with an Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X console once these consoles are released.

Install the Xbox application on your phone or tablet

Microsoft added its Xbox Remote Play feature to the latest version of the Xbox Android or iOS app. This apps lets you connect your mobile device to an Xbox One console and stream games you have installed on your console to it over your local network.

To install the latest version of the Xbox app, you need a compatible mobile phone or tablet with Android version 6.0 or greater, or iOS version 10 or greater for Apple users, and support for Bluetooth version 4.0 or higher.

Connect an Xbox controller to your mobile devices

To use the Xbox Remote Play feature to stream and control your Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X or Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X console, you also need a compatible wireless Xbox controller

The most recent controllers delivered with the Xbox One S, Xbox One X or Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X support Bluetooth and can be connected to mobile devices. Please note, older versions of the Xbox controller are not supported.

Navigate your Xbox console

The Xbox Remote Play feature in the Xbox app lets users navigate their Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X or Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X console, manage their game library and allows them to free up storage space on their local console.

Stream games to your phone or tablet

The first time you use the Remote Play feqture, the Xbox app will guide you through the setup on your Xbox console. Afterwards you can use the app to wake up the console and launch the game. Xbox Remote Play is available for free, so do not hesitate to try this feature yourself.

The content of your console shown on your screen will be streamed to your mobile device. A local network with transfer speeds of 10 Mbps or greater is required to use the Xbox Remote Play feature without noticeable stutters or visual artefacts.

Personal hands on experience

Long-term tests have shown great results. The Xbox Remote Play works almost without any problems over a local network. However, during gameplay sessions of several hours you may experience occasional artifacts or strutters in the video feed, yet these do not ruin the gameplay experience.

The Xbox Remote Play feature allows gamers to play their favorite games anywhere in the house, even with your girlfriend on the couch. No need to enjoy the same kind of content on the one television screen.

Occassional bugs and restarts

Is the Xbox Remote Play feature the ideal gameplay experience? Not at all, but it works great. Some occassional bugs need you to reconnect the Remote Play session. As an example, in Assassin’s Creed - Odyssay the Xbox Remote Play registered the wrong input on the controller and Kassandra kept running without being able to change her direction. A restart of the app solved this issue.

Microsoft is able to further optimize the mobile gameplay experience, yet the basis of the Xbox Remote Play is stable and almost problem free. It is clear that an Xbox is more than a console and gamers have the choice about how they want to experience their games. A great preview for the next generation of consoles.
