Vineyards and wine play a crucial role in the opening sequence of Assassin’s Creed – Odyssey, but there are non-alcoholic alternatives to this drink. To honour the god of wine Dionysos, we produce our own grape juice that you can share and drink with your friends. If you have never drunk a homemade grape juice, you are missing out.

In the course of the game, you hear a lot of tales about Dionysos, the Greek and Roman god of wine and grapes, theater, fertility, and religious or ritualistic ecstasy. After drinking this Assassin’s Creed – Odyssey inspired grape juice, you will agree: it is nothing like anything you can buy in a supermarket or store.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make your own grape juice from your own harvest.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 4 kilograms or 4 to 8 pounds of fresh picked grapes

Equipment

  • a large basket
  • two large stockpots
  • a wooden spoon
  • a large fine mesh sieve
  • a cup of sugar

Recipe

Step 1. Get a large basket and pick the bunches of grapes. Keep in mind that a half kilogram or one pound of grapes holds less than a cup of grape juice. Remember that late September and early October is grape season and the best time to make your own fresh grape juice.

Step 2. Put the fresh grapes in a basin filled with water and clean the grapes. Remove the branches and stems and discard the green unripe and old shriveled grapes. If you leave too much of these bad grapes in the basin, they negatively impact the taste of the juice and make it too bitter.

Step 3. Put the grapes in a large stockpot and slowly heat the grapes. Let them stand on the fire for an hour, maybe even two depending on the amount of grapes, until they burst open. Once you can stir this mixture of grapes and juice with a wooden spoon without much resistance, you should proceed to the next step.

Step 4. Put the cooked grapes and juice in a sieve and let it seep through for a few hours. Place your second large stockpot under the sieve and catch all the grape juice that runs through it. Let this cooked mixture sit for several hours or overnight to extract most juice.

Step 5. Carefully remove the sieve and throw away the remaining mixture. Taste the grape juice for the first time. If necessary, you can add a few spoons of sugar to make the grape juice sweeter. This depends on your personal taste.

Once you find the right balance, you are ready to enjoy your own homemade grape juice.
