Minecraft is a game for creative and patient gamers. Recently, I found out that large groups of gamers are using books, films and series as a source of inspiration to build large worlds. Together, they recreate entire castles and villages. Time to take a look at these creations of digital artwork.

After its release, Minecraft became an outlet for both children and adults to express their creativity. Entire communities of gamers came together to build large fantasy worlds within the constraints that everything is made of block. Some take these projects very serious and the results can be considered as digital art.

An unexpected adventure in Middle-Earth

In Minecraft Middle-Earth, you can explore the entire fantasy realm described in the books written by the British author J.R.R. Tolkien. A dedicated community of Minecraft builders designed and recreated the buildings, towns, landscapes and forests for other gamers to explore.

Middle-Earth is the fictional world in which the stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place. In this Minecraft recreation of this large and overwhelming fantasy world, you will find almost all location featured in the books and films.

In the footsteps of the Fellowship

The world of Minecraft Middle-Earth includes incredible recreations of the Shire, Helm’s Deep, Minas Tirith, Rivendell, the Mines of Moria and lots more. This massive project took the team nine years to complete and it is impressive. The world even includes the stone trolls.

To make Minecraft Middle-Earth even more detailed, the community added footprints in the world to show the exact path the Fellowship took in their quest to destroy the One Ring to protect the different regions of Middle-Earth.

A detailed recreation of Westeros

Even though the recreation of Middle-Earth is overwhelming and incredible, there are other projects worth mentioning. WesterosCraft is one of them. A dedicated community decided to recreate the Seven Kingdoms described in the works of A Song of Ice and Fire by author George R.R. Martin.

In WesterosCraft, you can explore the entire continent of Westeros known from the Game of Thrones adaptation. You will find iconic landmarks from King’s Landing to Winterfell, to everything in between. The map itself is large and exploring only one region is going to take a very, very long time.

Block by block, the community of WesterosCraft is recreating the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The project is still a work-in-progress, but definitely worth checking out. It is incredible what a group of driven gamers can do with enough creativity and time.

Digital art

Previously, I have written a post about Minecraft and how this game changes our perception of creativity and learning, but both Minecraft Middle-Earth and WesterosCraft are at a completely different level.

These Minecraft worlds inspired by books and films of two different fantasy authors are more than an expression of creativity, they serve as proof that communities of dedicated gamers can achieve great results together and use a medium to create digital art.
